CHAPTER 12
On the way back from her interview with Sherry Herrold, Wendy’s thought processes were all over the map. Both Merleece and Sicily Groves had expressed the idea that Miz Liddie had been almost a different person in recent months; that there was something more involved than the hair and the makeup and the outbursts of temper; that they couldn’t isolate exactly what that something extra was. Wendy continued her mental gymnastics. What if it were as plain as the nose on your face? What if it were hiding in plain sight? Perhaps she needed to go there instead of trying to make this too difficult. But where to start?
Familiar Rosalie landmarks whizzed by, but they might as well have been part of a dream as Wendy remained lost in thought at the steering wheel. And then she had the idea she knew would not let her down. It had been at least three weeks since she’d had her father over for dinner, what with everything that had happened. A session with sturdy, dependable Captain Bax never failed to uplift her, or calm her down or whatever else she needed to have freshly supplied. When she finally got home, she would call him up and ask him what his “teeth were tickling for.” Ha! That was his expression, and it had always made her laugh from the time she was a little girl. She remembered the routine as if it were yesterday.
“My teeth are tickling for some pot roast today, Valerie,” he would say to her mother before he left for the police station. “You think you could pull it off by the time I get home, sweetie? ”
“I don’t see why not,” she would tell him with a smile before sending him off with a kiss.
As long as her Captain Bax didn’t want her to simmer a pot roast all day, Wendy was certain she could throw together whatever he wanted, even one of his favorite desserts like coffee ice cream with bittersweet chocolate pieces sprinkled all over and whipped cream on top. She had all those ingredients waiting for her in her kitchen at this very moment, mostly in the fridge alongside her ever-faithful imaginary companion, Puh-ray-shah-day.
More importantly, Wendy needed her father’s counsel on her current project. He would be able to tell her if she might be veering off track, concentrating on this too much and not paying enough attention to that. She could bounce her ideas off of him and see if he gave her his seal of approval. Because she was becoming more and more concerned that no matter how many questions she asked of however many people, the evidence that pointed to Merleece was still there. It was never going to go away. Yet, she could simply not imagine herself being “played” by Merleece, either. Sooner or later, something had to give, and her father might be just the person to give it an enlightening shove.
